Oliver, Joan Dorothy

JoanOliver2018Joan Dorothy Oliver (née Butcher) of Meaford, ON (formerly Elmira, ON; born November 11, 1944 in Colchester, UK) passed away after a brief but courageous battle against cancer on January 10, 2018.

Daughter of the late Arthur Butcher and Grace (Swainston) Butcher, Joan is mourned, after 54 glorious years of marriage, by her husband Terrence V. Oliver, and all four of her children: Tracy (Rick) Hoffman, Kelly (Nick) Oliver, Linda (Manuel) Oliver, and her son, Matthew Oliver. She is sorely missed by her nine grandchildren: Joshua and Allyson Gerber; Savanna, Phoenix and Quinn Oliver; Nola and Coen Oliver; and Tyson and Reese Kuepfer. Joan is also survived by her sister Valerie Giles of Kitchener ON.

A woman of multiple talents—interior designer/decorator, florist, chef, gardener, hairdresser and more—Joan was also the pillar of her family; in fact she was its core. Fiercely strong, proud, proper and kind, and unstintingly loyal and loving throughout the course of her life, Joan was equal parts determination and grit.

Her intelligence taught all who understood her to think on their feet; all who admired her, to self-monitor for moral code and character; and all who loved her, to find the funny side in times of doubt or distress. Her humor could buoy you through any and all dark times.

The following poem (Robert Frost) perhaps best epitomizes who and what she was and what we have lost. Perhaps it even explains why she could not stay.

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

Joan’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the many doctors, nurses, surgeons and specialists at Owen Sound and Meaford Hospitals; immeasurable gratitude also to the Number 1 Homecare Nursing team.
